Brief Overview of the Project

The National Languages Equality Advancement Project (NLEAP) is supported by the Government of Canada in Partnership with the Ministry of Public Administration, Home Affairs, Provincial Councils and the Local Government of Sri Lanka to strengthen the implementation of the Sri Lankan Official Languages Policy by prioritizing linguistic rights, broader human rights and gender equality as stipulated in national and international commitments of both countries. NLEAP has offered a grant to the Postgraduate Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences (PGIHS) to conduct the research project on “Implementing Constitutional Policy of Language in a Multicultural Society: A Study of Political, Cultural, and Institutional Factors Affecting Effective Implementation of Languages Policy in Sri Lanka”.

This research project focuses on understanding and producing the required knowledge for the successful implementation of the Language policy enshrined in the Constitution of Sri Lanka. The research project includes nine study areas covering all the provinces in Sri Lanka. This includes Nagoda, Vavuniya, Kothmale, Negombo, Balangoda, Bibile, Puttalam, Welikanda and Trincomalee Divisional Secretariat Divisions.
