Background

The PGIHS offers postgraduate degree and diploma programmes and other short-term training programmes with an interdisciplinary and a multidisciplinary orientation. The PGIHS aims at becoming a centre of excellence in education, research, and creative thinking in the Humanities and the Social Sciences and to produce scholars committed to the advancement of knowledge through critical and independent thinking with a sense of duty toward society. At present, the PGIHS caters to approximately 2000-2500 students annually following courses leading to postgraduate diplomas, masters and doctoral degrees in many different disciplines under five Boards of Study. About 700 students complete postgraduate diploma, masters and doctoral degrees annually at the PGIHS.  The disciplines that the PGIHS provided training include: Arabic, Accounting, Archaeology, Buddhist Studies, Economics, Education, English, Fine Arts, Geography, Greek and Roman Studies (formerly known as Western Classical Culture), Hindu Civilization, History, Islamic Civilization, Management, Pali, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology,  Sanskrit,  Sinhala, Sociology and Tamil.

 Application Procedure 

Application forms can be obtained by writing to Assistant Registrar, PGIHS, University of Peradeniya, Peradeniya 20400, Sri Lanka with a self-addressed envelop. Electronic version of the Application Form can be downloaded from the website of the Institute (www.pgihs.lk) / can be obtained by writing to Programme Officer at info@pgihs.lk ; pgihs@yahoo.com.

Applicants are requested to follow the instruction given in the Application Form when completing it. All students seeking registration for research degree programmes shall submit a brief research proposal (2-3 pages synopsis) with the application form. This synopsis should include the following: Title of the research, Background/introduction, Research question/s, Research objective/s, Methodology, Brief literature survey, Expected outcome and a List references.

Application for Research Degrees –MPhil/PhD

An applicant for a research degree shall submit a synopsis of the research intended to carry out with the application form for the admission to the degree programme. Admission to a postgraduate research degree programme may depend on both academic ability of the student and the availability of interested and suitably qualified supervisors. The research synopsis will help to identify supervisors at the time of admission of a candidate. An applicant shall nominate names of two subject experts as tentative supervisors with their consent. However, the relevant Board of Study is the authority in appointing supervisors. A candidate registered for the Master of Philosophy and Doctor of Philosophy degree programmes of the PGIHS shall submit a thesis for the fulfillment of the requirements of the degree.

- A Bachelors’ Degree in any discipline;

Master of Arts in Applied Economics

- A Bachelors’ Degree (Special/General/Combined) with a First or Second Class (Upper/Lower Division) pass;       OR
- A Bachelors’ Degree and a Postgraduate Diploma;       AND
- Two years of work experience after completing the first degree;

Minimum 30 credits from coursework and an independent study

Master of Arts
(by coursework)

- A Bachelor’s Degree (Special) with a First or Second Class (Upper/Lower Division) pass;  OR
- A Bachelor’s Degree (General/Combined) with a First or Second Class (Upper or Lower Division) pass  with a Grade not less than an average ‘B’ or equivalent grade point in the subject in which the applicant intends to register for a Masters of Arts degree programme; OR
- A Postgraduate Diploma in the relevant subject/field;

Minimum 30 credits from coursework and an independent study

Master of Philosophy

- A Bachelor’s Degree (Special) with a First or Second Class (Upper Division) pass; OR
- A Bachelor’s Degree (General/Combined) with a First or Second Class (Upper Division) pass  with a Grade not less than an average ‘B’ or equivalent grade point in the relevant subject/field; OR
- A Bachelors’ Degree (Special/General/Combined) and a Postgraduate Diploma in the relevant subject/field;  OR
-A Bachelors’ Degree (Special/General/Combined) in any discipline and a Masters’ degree  in the relevant subject/field;

Two years of full-time research (The Board of Study may recommend coursework)

Doctor of Philosophy

- A Master of Arts, Master of Science, Master of Business Administration and Master of Philosophy Degree in the relevant field of study

Three years of full time research (The Board of Study may recommend coursework)

*A person may also be admitted as a student to follow a degree programme if he/she has obtained special qualifications for admission to the programme which the relevant Board of Study of the Institute has accepted as suitable for the applicant’s proposed field of study.

Revision of Fees and Charges 

The Institute shall reserve the right to revise or change fees and charges of degree programmes without prior notice. Students who have not completed their programmes when a change is made to the fees shall pay at new rates for the balance of their programme. 

Payment of Fees

  • At the registration, a candidate should make the following payments: registration fee, 50% of the Academic Fee, Library fee and library deposit. The balance 50% of the Academic Fee can be paid in two installments before the commencement of the semester examinations.   
  • All fees and charges related to postgraduate diploma/degree programmes should be made payable in following modes: deposit to the PGIHS Bank Account 057-1-001-6-0027421 at People’s Bank or write a cheque to “Postgraduate Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences” or pay by cash to the Shroff of the PGIHS. Applicants/students should produce copy of the payment slip to the Institute immediately after the payment of relevant fees and charges.

Refund of Fees

Fees and charges paid in respect of postgraduate diploma/degree programme of the Institute shall not be refunded. However, the following exemptions are applied:

  • Where a fee is paid under a misapprehension on the part of the candidate or where it is paid in excess under such a misapprehension, the fee or the excess may be refunded with a 10% deduction as university administrative charges;
  • Where a fee has been paid due to a mistake/lapse on the part of university officials, the whole or whatever part of the fee that has been paid in excess of the right amount may be refunded.
  • Where a candidate withdraws from the examinations before the date of the commencement of the examination or withdraws from the examination on medical grounds, he/she shall pay one half of the prescribed fee when re-sitting the examination in the year immediately following the withdrawal.
